Datawell has recently enabled their Waverider buoys to be fitted with AIS (Automatic Identification System). This technology can be fitted to new orders or retrofitted to existing equipment.

Why has the technology been upgraded?

This new AIS technology enables the end user to significantly reduce the risk of structural damage to the buoy from collisions, which can detrimentally effect how the data is collected and overall safety at sea.

How does the new AIS technology work?

The AIS (Automatic identification system) is modular and installed inside the buoy, protecting it from external damage. Its tracking system uses the existing antenna to send out a signal that communicates the exact coordinates of a buoy.

The buoy broadcasts its position at 162MHz, however, it also has the ability to broadcast at 440Mw.

Energy consumption

The new software minimises energy consumption, ensuring minimal impact on the buoy’s battery life.

Nominal energy consumption from the battery is approximately 56mW. By comparison, the total energy consumption of a DWR-MKIII is 350mW.

Will my existing Datawell Waverider still work without the update?

Yes, current equipment will work with the current software. The new feature simply ensures safer maritime operations due to it’s upgraded capabilities.
