Join our Ocean Systems Technician, Craig Macintosh, on the first SRS Fusion ROV x RS Aqua Orca passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) trials. This deployment was used for testing whether the two complimentary technologies could deliver the brief from our customer.

Our end user wanted to accurately collect noise intelligence underwater using an ROV whilst holding a precise position for an extended period of time.

The SRS Fusion hybrid ROV has the capability of being tethered and manually controlled, or you can pre-programme the mission and use the Fusion autonomously, in AUV mode.  In addition to versatile mission control options, the Fusion is extremely stable in dynamic conditions, and easy to integrate 3rd party sensors.

Sensors and accessories available on the Fusion:

• Forward- facing sonar
• Side scan sonar
• DVL
• USBL
• 2D and 3D cameras
Reach Robotics Manipulator arms

With its modular design, there’s flexibility for an array of custom accessories for different underwater tasking.

In this project, we added a skid payload which was designed to hold Orca in place and a customised rotating sensor array to hold the hydrophones in position. The array was developed to optimise hydrophone performance and minimise any acoustic artefacts from other noise sources that were of lessor interest to our end user.

More on ORCA:

Orca is a high performance underwater acoustic data logger and signal processor. With multiple input channels, real-time data streaming and extremely high sampling rates, Orca can be used to capture, record and process some of the richest underwater data sets possible.

Key features:

• Multiple selectable sample rates
• Real time data streaming
• On board statistical noise analysis

At RS Aqua, we embrace challenges that spark discovery and drive the development of ocean technology. Working alongside our partner companies gives us the opportunity to combine expertise and technologies, pushing boundaries together while uncovering new insights.
