Marine Measurement 64: Hosted By RS Aqua

Last week, 6 July, RS Aqua had the pleasure of hosting the first Marine Measurement Forum (MMF) in two years. MMF is a series of non-profit, one-day events focusing on connecting marine technology industry in a peer-to-peer environment.

The July event was held in the beautiful Port Solent Marina where attendees got to enjoy the benefit of the warm summer weather on the backdrop of the marina’s stunning quayside views.

With thirteen speakers from across the industry, the 64th MMF was united by the theme of cross-sector collaboration. Speaker sessions, sectioned into sub-themes, covered a range of ongoing and recent projects from the UK and globally. The topics covered were ocean science, the seabed, large-scale projects, and optimising science and exploration.

In the first round, ocean science, the talks included exploration of pH monitoring, eDNA, harmful algal bloom detection and marine measurement innovation. Altogether providing a very insightful look into the current and future ways of monitoring the ocean environment.

Following was the seabed speaker session, which featured some impressive research and innovation from Inosys, Sonardyne and GeoAcoustics. All showcasing the huge potential for ocean technology applications at the sea floor.

Steering Group Update

Before taking a break for lunch and networking, the MMF64 day featured an update from the new MMF steering committee – Aidan Thorn, Kira Coley, Martin Stemp, Helen Atkinson, and Philip Bishop. With the new steering group comes updated branding which RS Aqua has been working on and a new website look to come soon! During the update Sonardyne’s Aidan Thorn highlighted the MAChallenge 2023. The upcoming SMI organised competition aims to get UK undergraduate students engaged in marine autonomy and connect them with the industry.

During lunch, MMF attendees had the opportunity to attend a live demo at the dockside of the SEAMOR Chinook ROV equipped with a 360° ROV sonar from Impact Subsea.

Large-scale projects was the third speaker theme and included fascinating projects like Seabed2030, BORA: Blue Ocean Research Alliance, and non-for-profit research charity Seas Your Future. Through all three talks, it was made apparent how vast and far-reaching ocean science can be in assisting climate crisis management.

Last but most definitely not least, the day concluded with presentations on optimising science and exploration. Moderated by Ocean Scientists – Phoebe Chadwick, the session featured updates from Nortek, Chelsea Technologies and the Channel Coastal Observatory.

With over 60 attendees, the 64th MMF event was a great day to connect with peers old and new in the marine technology space. RS Aqua would like to thank every one of our attendees and speakers for making this a brilliant day for celebrating the up and coming in maritime.
