RS Aqua’s WaveRadar REX has been used as a case study in the 2019 UK Government – promoting the UK’s world-class global maritime offer: trade and investment 5-year plan 2019.
The case study details the installation of a WaveRadar REX system on Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas where wave measurement sensors have been fitted to the bows of the ship. “They are trusted to monitor wave conditions to improve navigational efficiency. They also aid berthing and most importantly help keep passengers and crew safe.”
The WaveRadar REX measures the distance to the surface of the water, 10 times per second, with great precision. Pitch and roll data from the ship’s MRU feed into a new motion compensation software module and are used to offset the WaveRadar REX inclination. The vessel’s motion effects are subtracted from the air gap measurements in real-time prior to standard statistical wave processing.
Almost 25 million passengers travel by cruise ship each year. Ensuring their comfort and safety is of utmost importance to the operators within the global cruise industry. RS Aqua were approached by Wärtsilä to provide a measurement solution that would allow wave conditions on both sides of the Mariner of the Seas to be monitored in real time.
Mariner of the Seas is the fourth Royal Caribbean ship that features the WaveRadar REX.
